The 2022 Longines Ultra-Chron watch has a distinct vintage-inspired styling thanks to its cushion-shaped case and has been inspired by the brand’s much earlier high-beat mechanical dive watch from 1968.
If you’re looking to extend your dive watch collection, the new Longines Ultra Chron watch is certainly worth some consideration. The two new models – one fitted on a dark brown leather strap and the other on a stainless steel bracelet – ooze plenty of mid-century styling, making them a great option for those who enjoy collecting retro dive watches. The new Longines Ultra Chron watches are based on the design of an important model released by Longines back in 1968. As a pioneer in sports timekeeping, Longines has a rich history in developing high-beat movements that spans over 100 years, one of them being the earlier 1968 Ultra Chron watch which, for its time, also offered an impressive water resistance.
The history of the Longines Ultra Chron
The design of the new Longines Ultra Chron watch harks back to an important year in the Swiss watch brand’s heritage. The year 1967 marked the point at which Longines released a highly accurate chronometer named the Longines Ultra-Chron. A year after that, Longines released a sportier version that was more equipped for underwater use thanks to its impressive 200-meter water resistance and robust case construction. This high-frequency diving watch is now celebrated once again in the design of the Longines Ultra Chron watch – new for 2022 and integrated with an improved water resistance of 300 meters. Some of its most striking aesthetical characteristics include its vibrant red central minute hand and its beautiful cushion-shaped stainless steel case, not to mention its reliable automatic movement, the Calibre L836.
The new Longines Ultra-Chron watch
Vintage dive watches and retro dive watches are in high demand at the moment. Many collectors turn to an affordable dive watch manufacturer that can promise the longevity and accuracy of a reliable mechanical movement combined with retro styling, making luxury dive watches like the Longines Ultra Chron a particularly appealing wristwatch for 2022. The model ticks at 10 beats per second with an impressive 36,600 vibrations per hour and offers a power reserve of 52 hours once fully wound. The self-winding movement sits behind a screw-down caseback engraved with the watchmaker’s stylized waveform logo and comprises a monocrystalline silicon balance spring that helps resist the damaging effects of magnetic fields.
The new Longines Ultra Chron watch presents the time on a legible black dial and keeps the vivid red minute hand seen in the original model from 1968. Additionally, an eye-catching 60-minute scale applied to the surface of the watch’s black aluminium unidirectional rotating bezel enables effortless timekeeping whilst underwater. The bezel moves in the counter-clockwise direction only, ensuring that the risk of accidentally extending dive time whilst underwater is ruled out. A sapphire surface is applied to the surface of the bezel to protect the markings from weathering and fading in the light – an upgrade from the original Ultra Chron watch’s bakelite bezel. The hour markings around the dial and the hands are also treated with plenty of Swiss Super-LumiNova® material to assist with timekeeping in the dark.
The new Longines Ultra Chron watch is crafted from stainless steel and measures a diameter of 43mm. It sits at a height of 13.6mm and features upper polished lugs that complement the model’s coin edge bezel and polished chamfers for a dramatic finish on the wrist. Both the leather band option ref L2.836.4.52.8 and the stainless steel option L2.836.4.52.9 come with an additional NATO-style strap crafted from recycled material. Whilst the Longines Ultra Chron watch on a brown leather strap enhances the dive watch’s vintage-inspired aesthetics, the stainless steel model offers something a little more sophisticated to wear with formal attire. The new Longines Ultra Chron watch also comes with an additional strap changing tool for an easy transition from one style to the other using the NATO strap.
