The latest additions to the collection are extraordinary technical achievements as well as a tribute to the pioneers who made scuba diving possible. It is their passion and dedication which opened up whole new vistas for underwater exploration and that continue to inspire Blancpain in using innovative materials and new technical solutions in order to push the limits of its timepieces and to fulfil the most sophisticated demands.
Over the course of its almost seven-decade existence, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms watch range has maintained strong connections with explorers, photographers, scientists, and environmentalists who hold a deep appreciation for our precious marine resources. These bonds of kinship have served as a wellspring of motivation for Blancpain, driving the brand to actively champion significant undertakings and initiatives dedicated to the well-being of our oceans.
In 1953 the Royal Navy commissioned Blancpain to manufacture a functional watch for extensive underwater exploration. Responding to this need, Blancpain produced the prototype of the Fifty Fathoms watch, complete with a water resistance of 50 fathoms from which it took its name. This 300-metre water resistance was no mean feat for a manufacture of this period. Over time, the Fifty Fathoms watch collection has evolved and has branched into several categories
The Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Automatique watch collection takes its inspiration from earlier models with versions offered in stainless steel, lightweight titanium or a more luxurious 18ct rose gold options. Whilst these models measure a broad and confident 45mm diameter, the Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe is a reinterpretation of a classic and was launched in 2013 as a celebratory mark of the Fifty Fathom’s 60th anniversary. Its name is taken from the deep sea submersible developed by Swiss explorer Auguste Piccard in the 1940s and offers the collector more restrained and modern interpretations of the original Bathyscaphe watch collection. In addition to this, the Blancpain Fifty Fathoms Bathyscaphe collection also offers a 38mm unisex model and comes equipped with a useful 100-hour power reserve.
