More on OMEGA Speedmaster Watches
The OMEGA Speedmaster watch is one of the Swiss watchmaker’s most famous chronographs. Nicknamed the OMEGA Snoopy watch and equipped with three distinctive chronograph counters and a surrounding tachymeter scale on its bezel, the Speedmaster watch made history when on July 20th 1969 it was strapped to the wrist of astronaut Buzz Aldrin, becoming the first watch to be worn on the moon. Many die-hard OMEGA enthusiasts invest in a Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional to own a piece of history. Furthermore, the Speedmaster watch’s iconic design makes it an impactful statement piece to wear on the wrist. By the time NASA had selected the watch for its lunar missions, it had already subjected many runner-up models to a series of extreme temperature tests, vibration and anti-shock tests, vacuum pressure tests and many other variables to determine their robustness. As a result of their reliability, durability and performance, OMEGA Speedmaster watches are still used for NASA’s manned space missions today.
Since the 1960s, OMEGA Speedmaster watches have evolved. The plexiglass front of the original model was phased out and eventually replaced with a much stronger and more scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, whilst the tritium hands and indexes on the dial were swapped for Super-LumiNova for a longer-lasting glow. Other elements of the Speedmaster watch’s design remain as close to the original as possible. The same can also be said for the movement that powers it. The Calibre 1861 - a Co-Axial Master Chronometer now found in the current OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch is based on the original Calibre 861, which powered the first watch on the moon.
Today the OMEGA Speedmaster watches collection is home to several models including quartz watches, digital watches, automatic timepieces and manual chronographs. Some of the top models within the OMEGA Speedmaster Moonwatch Professional series promise a magnetic resistance of up to 15,000 gauss. Some of the latest additions to enter the family include the 2022 releases of the Speedmaster ’57' a model first introduced in 2013. These younger additions feature a re-sized 40.5mm case crafted from stainless steel and come in a range of dial colours including deep blue, deep green and burgundy, as well as classic black. These OMEGA Speedmaster watches honour a 65-year old design, with chronograph dials arranged at 3 and 9 o’clock. These models come in a choice of matching coloured leather bands or a classic brushed and polished stainless steel bracelet option.
Also belonging to the collection is the Speedmaster Chronoscope sub-series, inspired by chronograph watches from the 1940s. Measuring a 43mm size, these iterations are characterised by their leaf-shaped hands, a distinct spiral track pattern that runs underneath an hour track depicted by Arabic numerals, and a trio of elegantly snailed timing scales. Upon the dial of these OMEGA Speedmaster watches are a telemeter scale for measuring the distance of an audible subject, a pulsometer scale for measuring a person’s pulse, and a tachymeter scale for measuring speed based on distance. One special model, in particular, is forged from Bronze Gold, a proprietary material made in-house at OMEGA with a unique pink hue and an impressive corrosion-resistant composition. The iconic Speedmaster watch remains a testament to the company’s pioneering role in the watchmaking industry, as well as a highly respected tool for some of history’s greatest space missions endured by mankind.
