As one of the most successful of Cartier watches, the perfectly round shape of the instrument is intended to mimic the shape of a balloon - it’s bubble-like profile of course, resting upon the wrist like a floating balloon. The comparison was made by one of Cartier’s senior directors, Michael Groffenburger.

The crowns of Ballon Bleu de Cartier watches are protected underneath a gorgeous arc shaped feature which cuts into the shape of the case and the dial at the 3 o’clock location, creating a pronounced feature that soon becomes the focal point of the design. The source of inspiration for the Ballon Bleu de Cartier collection is clearly the blue injection of colour to the design, seen in a pair of central sword-shaped hands on the dial, and the blue sapphire topped crown. 

As with each and every Cartier watch design (apart from those dressed with elegant diamond set dials and bezels), the use of the Roman Numeral hour indexes are an important addition to each timepiece. The design element pays homage to the classic, simple and traditional feel to all Cartier watches - qualities that help to secure them as popular choices still to this day. There are currently around 100 Ballon Bleu de Caartier watches for women and 40 different variations for men. Each unique design tells a different story, with characteristics that will appeal to individuals for all different reasons.

These versions offer the gent a classic dial with perfectly rounded subscales and blue steeled hands, to provide a timepiece with a little added touch of functionality.  The 42mm gentlemen’s watches feature a subtle date window located at the 3 o’clock position with the Cartier lettering underneath the twelfth hour, creating balance across the dial.
