The emblematic design of the Cartier Santos watch lives on with two new Santos de Cartier watches released at this year’s Watches and Wonders 2022 event in Geneva – a silver dial version and a blue dial version – both of which feature a stunning deep blue bezel
The Cartier Santos watch – the square icon – has over 100 years of success to look back on, which makes the release of the two new blue Santos de Cartier watches even more exciting. The brand’s unwavering commitment to re-creating the world’s first pilot’s watch without losing any of its instantly recognisable features has been the key to Cartier’s successful approach to growing this beloved line. The Cartier Santos is one of the oldest wristwatches developed by the French luxury watchmaker and was first designed back in 1904 by Louis Cartier when he was approached by Brazilian aviation pioneer, Alberto Santos-Dumont. Setting itself apart from other designs, the Santos de Cartier watch is the modern version of the classic Cartier Santos watch. It still boasts the striking square-shaped case, large legible Roman numeral hour markers, a railroad minute track and integrated lugs that enable a bracelet to sit comfortably on the wrist. Continuing with these values, the new Santos de Cartier watch releases for 2022 are visually striking and daringly play with a bold deep blue colour.
Santos de Cartier watches have been around since 2018, offering the avid Cartier watch collector a relaxed version of the Cartier Santos watch, with softer, more rounded corners and curved edges that transition seamlessly into the bracelet. Of course, this model has been released in several versions, some of those being classic steel models, others featuring a captivating gradient blue dial and even some with black coated cases. New for 2022, these latest two Santos de Cartier watches showcase a blue-coated bezel.
These new sporty yet casual Santos de Cartier watches are perfect for daily wear. The modern dimensions of the case paired with a strong anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, plus an impressive 100-meter water resistance make this watch suitable for wearing alongside relaxed attire, as well as smart elegant attire by night. The dimensions of its steel case measure 39.8mm in width and 47.5mm in length. It sits on the wrist at a depth of 9.37mm, whilst the functional uncoated screws adorning the deep blue coated bezel form a stylish frame around a silver or rich blue dial option. For the first time, the bezel of the Santos de Cartier watch is also executed in a patterned texture with horizontal grooves that donate an added sense of depth and detail to the design.
Both the blue dial version of the Santos de Cartier watch ref. CRWSSA0048 and the silver dial version ref. CRWSSA0047 have square-shaped central sections that echo this same horizontal patterned finish. This time, Cartier replaces the familiar blued steel hands with larger hands that have received a deep blue trim and have been treated with Super-LumiNova for assisted timekeeping in the dark or during the night. The blue-coloured oversized Roman numerals have been applied to the surface of the dials instead of painted. Adding to the versatility of the new Santos de Cartier watches in blue is the company’s innovative QuickSwitch system, which was first released back in 2018. Its design enables the wearer to swap between a stainless steel bracelet or a blue rubber strap without the use of additional strap-changing tools.
Inside the robust square-shaped case of both Santos de Cartier watches is the same automatic Calibre 1847 MC, which produces a power reserve of 42 hours and performs at a rate of 28,800 vibrations per hour. The self-winding Calibre 1847 MC was first developed for the Cle de Cartier watch collection in 2015 and has been proving its autonomy and reliability ever since. It sits inside the stainless steel case, executed in a mix of brushed and polished finishes, with a crown situated at 3 o’clock adorned with a blue synthetic faceted spinel.
Of course, the Santos de Cartier watch collection is a versatile range of wristwatches that offers a choice in case material, styles, straps and features. Amongst this range of timepieces are chronograph versions of the Santos de Cartier watch, as well as cases crafted from stainless steel and 18ct yellow gold. One of the most exclusive designs from the Santos watch range is the Santos Dumont XL Limited Edition in stainless steel with a luxurious rose gold dial. A guilloche centre with silver-coloured Arabic numerals and a set of blued steel hands come together to create an unusual mix of textures, tones and finishes, all of which are surrounded by an 18ct rose gold bezel bolted down by 8 steel screws to match the remaining case material.
