Limited to just 2,022 pieces worldwide, the Longines Hydroconquest XXII Commonwealth Games watch celebrated the watchmaker’s role as Official Timekeeper of the 2022 Commonwealth Games.
Longines has released a limited edition Hydroconquest watch that pays homage to its contribution to the sports industry. The prestigious St-Imier-based watchmaker first became the Official Timekeeper for the Commonwealth Games back in 1962 in Perth, Australia and then again in 2014 in Glasgow, followed by 2018 in Gold Coast, Australia. To mark a renewal of this special relationship with the sporting event, Longines releases the new limited edition XXII Commonwealth Games watch – a take on the bold and powerful Hydroconquest diver’s watch.
The Longines Hydroconquest XXII Commonwealth Games Limited Edition timepiece is a highly colourful, water-resistant time and date watch that underscores the key values of the already popular Hydroconquest diver’s watch but in a new and attention-demanding way. Back in 2020, the Swiss watchmaker renewed its role as the Official Timekeeper to the Commonwealth games – a major sports event that sees over 70 Commonwealth nations compete against one another. To mark the recent strengthening of its ties with such an event, Longines explains a little about the significance of this new rugged and robust limited-edition watch from the Hydroconquest collection:
The story between Longines and the Commonwealth Games began in the past century, with the 1962 Games in Perth (Australia). It continued with the 2014 edition in Glasgow (Scotland) and 2018 edition in Gold Coast (Australia). A new milestone was set in 2020 with the conclusion of a historic partnership, in which the brand will continue to use its timekeeping expertise in the 2022, 2026 and 2030 Games.
Despite the presence of many faithful Hydroconquest design codes, the new Hydroconquest XXII Commonwealth Games watch has some unexpected characteristics. Its rainbow-colored markings on the bezel, in the minute track and around the date window, not to mention the tip of the second hand, all add a pop of colour to what is normally associated with a very classic-looking diving watch. It features a sleek black dial with generous amounts of Super-LumiNova applied to the surface of its chunky hands and highly visible hour markers. Assisting with timekeeping in the night or whilst navigating through deep dark underwater territory, it is clear that the new limited edition Hydroconquest is just as capable of delivering important dive watch functions as it is at creating a bold statement on the wrist. Helping it to do the latter is a sophisticated stainless-steel bracelet that pairs well with formal attire, yet looks sporty enough when accompanied by something more casual over the weekend
The new Longines Commonwealth Games watch is 300-meter water-resistant and crafted from stainless steel with an easy-grip black ceramic unidirectional rotating bezel for measuring elapsed time underwater. The bezel moves in the counterclockwise direction only, ensuring that dive time can never accidentally become extended. The knurled bezel assists with an easy grip under diving gloves, as does the screw-in crown at 3 o’clock, marked with the famous Longines logo. The top of the watch is sealed with an anti-reflective and scratch-resistant sapphire crystal glass, providing ultimate protection over the surface of the dial. Underneath the glass front is a minute track and a date window embellished in the colours of the Commonwealth Games event. Echoing these colours is the 60-minute diving scale on the surface of the bezel itself, plus the tip of the central second hand.
Other basic design features of the Hydroconquest watch are intact. These include the fine-brushed and polished effects of the case in a compact 41mm size. Also, a screw-down caseback. This time the surface of the caseback has been engraved with lettering that depicts the limited-edition number out of 2022 pieces made available worldwide, as well as the “Birmingham 2022” logo. The second hand is the familiar lollipop style and the date window is positioned at 3 o’clock. Propelling the luminous hands around the black dial is the Longines Calibre L888.5 – a self-winding movement that performs with a total of 28, 800 vibrations per hour. It delivers a 72-hour power reserve and has been fitted with anti-magnetic components that include a silicon balance spring for overall improved mechanical performance.
The watch comes fitted on a brushed and polished stainless-steel bracelet, with a double security folding clasp to secure the watch firmly onto the wrist, along with a diver’s extension mechanism for wearing over the top of a wetsuit if required.
